A Statistical Bandwidth Sharing Perspective on Buffer Sizing

چکیده
The issue of buffer sizing is rightly receiving increasing attention with the realization that the bandwidth delay product rule-ofthumb is becoming unsustainable as link capacity continues to grow. In the present paper we examine this issue from the light of our understanding of traffic characteristics and the performance of statistical bandwidth sharing. We demonstrate through simple analytical models coupled with the results of ns2 simulations that, while a buffer equivalent to the bandwidth delay product is certainly unnecessary, the recently advocated reduction to a few dozen packets is too drastic. The required buffer size depends significantly on the peak exogenous rate of multiplexed flows.

A Deterministic TCP Bandwidth Sharing Model
Traditionally TCP bandwidth sharing has been investigated mainly by stochastic approaches due to its seemingly chaotic nature. Even though of great generality, the theories deal mainly with expectation values, which is prone to misinterpretation with respect to the Quality-of-Experience (QoE). We disassemble TCP operating conditions into dominating scenarios and show that bandwidth sharing alon...
متن کاملSource Time Scale and Optimal Buffer/Bandwidth Trade-Off for Regulated Traffic in an ATM Node
In this paper, we study the problem of resource allocation and control for an ATM node with regulated traffic. Both guaranteed lossless service and statistical service with small loss probability are considered. We investigate the relationship between source characteristics and the buffer/bandwidth trade-off under both services. Our contributions are the following. For guaranteed lossless servi...
متن کاملUse of Analytical Performance Models for System Sizing and Resource Allocation in Interactive Video-on-Demand Systems Employing Data Sharing Techniques
ÐIn designing cost-effective video-on-demand (VOD) servers, efficient resource management and proper system sizing are of great importance. In addition to large storage and I/O bandwidth requirements, support of interactive VCR functionality imposes additional resource requirements on the VOD system in terms of storage space, as well as disk and network bandwidth. Previous works have used adata...
متن کاملDesign and Analysis of a Bandwidth Management Framework for ATM-Based Broadband ISDN
When designing and configuring an ATM-based B-ISDN, it remains difficult to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) for different service classes, while still allowing enough statistical sharing of bandwidth so that the network is efficiently utilized. These two goals are often conflicting. Guaranteeing QoS requires traffic isolation, as well as allocation of enough network resource (e.g. buffer...
متن کاملThe TCP Bandwidth-Delay Product revisited: network buffering, cross traffic, and socket buffer auto-sizing
TCP is often blamed that it cannot use efficiently network paths with high Bandwidth-Delay Product (BDP). The BDP is of fundamental importance because it determines the required socket buffer size for maximum throughput. In this paper, we re-examine the BDP concept, considering the effects of network buffering and cross traffic on the ‘bandwidth’ and ‘delay’ characteristics of a path. We show t...
